Sound design/ composition

One of my first vivid memories of music was watching Marie Antoinette (2006) far too young and getting more obsessed with the soundtrack than the film. Dustin O’halloran and Aphex Twin fascinated me with their modern approaches to composition. I was classicaltly trained in Piano and Music theory from age seven and then I extended that training at Jazz Conservatoire (College of Performing Arts, The New School) in New York. After a year I dropped out and applied to Central Saint Martins in part because I felt that music school was limiting me to my instrument, and that goes against my understanding of music as expansive and intertwined with so many other fields. I continued with Jazz Piano for around another year under the tutelage of jazz pianist Haim Cotton to whom I owe a lot of my later understanding of music. 

Below are a selection of compositions and video collages to show you my sensibilties. As I’ve focused more on production and songwriting the piano pieces are not professionally recorded. But hopefully it shows you the lane I operate in musically. My composition arguably blurs with my production, so I’m always doing both. My biggest influences are Dustin O’halloran, Nico Muhly, Björk and early-modern “impressionist” French composers like Maurice Ravel, Debussy and Gabriel Fauré as well as figures in jazz like Alice Coltrane, Duke Ellington and Dorothy Ashby.

My approach sometimes takes alternative or experimental routes as I spent years at Central St. Martins where I experimented with various processes, eg putting things through tape machines, or sampling something and having a real person play the loop, collaging video, etc etc.
