I am Swiss/Ghanaian artist b.2001, based in London. I also release music under the alias etherbaby.
My work has been described as “manic gen-z girl absurdism” by a viewer. Fine. Through a combination of self-portraiture, performance and the use of ephemeral materials, I look into the cultural obsession with an idealized forever-girlhood and the aestheticization of female suffering. Specifically, the relation of both these things to spectatorship and self-spectatorship.
I am interested in the dissociation / fragmentation inherent in “becoming” (or not-becoming, or performing) a woman and how this not-becoming intersects with the ghostliness and recursive nature of culture in the 2020s, (as best described by Mark Fisher), as well as the political implications of this not-becoming in the current landscape.
On a deeper level my work aspires to create alternate mythologies and aesthetics around integrating the violence of our everyday lives, as well as imagining ways of honestly metabolizing this reality; a future beyond shame or bedazzled self destruction.
Though, right now, I mostly make fun of things.
I draw from existentialist feminism, mysticism, Jungian psychoanalysis, theories around hauntology + the cyber-gothic, and a chronically online analysis of pop culture. Some things I’ve written:
Sabrina Carpenter and the Great Big Nightmare
Purity Culture is Driving Us Insane (the closest thing I’ll ever write to a manifesto)
